HUG recently screened the inspirational movie of Queen of Katwe at Kyabram’s Plaza Theatre.

The night was a huge success and helped to create awareness as well as raise funds for HUG and Smiling heART's projects in Uganda. People from towns right across the Goulburn Valley attended and learned much from the truly eye opening movie.
Queen of Katwe was a powerful true story of the constant struggle for 10-year-old Phiona and her family who lived in a slum area of Kampala. Phiona's world changed when she met Robert Katende, who taught children how to play chess. Phiona became fascinated with the game and soon became a top player. As a result of the support she received from her family and community, Phiona was instilled with the confidence and determination she needed to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion and escaping from a life of poverty.
The movie was very true to life; taking past Suubi volunteers in the audience on a journey back with every sight and sound. For those who have not experienced life in Uganda for themselves, it gave a very clear picture of the determination it takes to succeed in Uganda, which fitted perfectly with our HUG message. Everyone had a great time at supper afterwards, reminiscing and chatting about all the wonderful things that have been achieved at Suubi.
Our huge thanks goes to everyone who attended and the amazing Plaza theatre volunteers who helped us pull the night together.
