It is amazing to think how far our annual sports tournament has come since our first, way back in 2010. That makes this year our 10th Butonde Bwansi Tournament - quite an achievement! It is wonderful to know that so many mad keen sports lovers have had the opportunity to either participate or be spectators at the football, netball, cycling, tug of war and matooke peeling competitions over all those years. Literally tens of thousands of people have enjoyed the events, but also heard about the services and projects that Suubi Centre have to offer and how they can get involved. What a great way to advertise!
The earlier rounds of this years round robin football tournament began on July 13th and ran for almost a full month before culminating with the finals today at Lubanda pitch. As has become the norm, today saw huge numbers of people flock, from villages surrounding Suubi Centre, to be part of the action. But those who could not make it to Lubanda did not miss out; our now famous cycling event saw 36 competitors race through the surrounding villages. It was a fabulous sight to see the course lined with crowds of people, cheering on the competitors as they zipped past at high speed.

Thirty six riders eagerly awaited the start of the cycling race that commenced and ended in Lubanda Village.

The race passed through many surrounding villages along the way, where people came out to cheer the riders on.

After an exciting but exhausting race the riders were happy to have their lunch at Suubi Centre before heading to the pitch to enjoy the rest of the day.
The netball, matooke peeling and tug of war competitions were all thoroughly enjoyed before the the football final commenced.

Each of the netball teams played three matches on the day. The final was eventually taken out by St Benard's Secondary School, Kiswera - 21 to Kikenene 11

The motooke peeling was also keenly watched as Nannyonga Scovia showed Munyanja Derick just how it should be done.

Both the mens and women's tug of war competitions bought much fun; lots of cheering and laughing for everyone.
After some very close matches throughout the earlier rounds and semi finals, a much anticipated rematch of last years football final between Lubanda FC and Kinonni Town Academy eventuated. It proved to be a hard fought, high standard match that saw a nil all draw at the end of 90 minutes play today. It seemed fitting that Lubanda FC were able to turn the tables on last years result, when they took out the penalty shoot out - 5 goals to 4.

Both teams were presented to the officials and member of the Setem team, from Barcelona, before the match commenced.

Spectators surrounded the entire pitch to enjoy the high standard final.

There were a number of chances for both teams to score goals throughout the match,

but it was eventually decided by a penalty shoot out.
Once play was completed for the day, prizes for winners and runners up were presented by the Suubi organising committee and students from Suubi Secondary School. Cycling participants were presented with cycling uniforms and the winner was very excited to take home a brand new bike. Netball finalists and the runners up in the football were presented with goats. It is exciting to note that these goats were actual bought from our very own Suubi goat farm this year! The winning football team, Lubanda FC, was thrilled to win a cow for their efforts.

Prizes were distributed at the end of another hugely successful event. The cow, which was awarded to the winning Lubanda FC, took centre stage and Suubi SS students were on hand to distribute the cycling uniforms which had been donated by Cycling Australia and Altus.

Kato Paul was the winner of the cycling event from Waaswa Peter, Salongo Bukenya, Segane Peter, Sekijobi Emmanuel, Kivumbi Yahaya, Nyanzi Tonny, Kamera Simon, Kamya Richard and Kalima Joseph.

Kato Paul was extremely happy to win a brand new bicycle and still had enough energy to haul it above his head to celebrate.

The girls from St Bernard's Secondary School were happy to take home a goat for winning this years netball final.

The boys from Kinnoni Town Academy also received a goat for being runners up in this years football final. They are sure to return for the 2020 event in the hope of claiming the title back again.
We would like to say a huge thank you to the Suubi Centre organising committee - it is a huge amount of work to run an event of this size each year and they continue to work tirelessly to make sure the Butonde Bwansi Tournament is a huge success and enjoyed by all. Webale nnyo, nnyo, nnyo!
