Many of you would have read in the last blog about six ladies from Suubi who travelled to Kabaale to take part in comprehensive training at the Mushroom Training and Resource Centre. Since then these inspired women have wasted no time in passing on their new found skills to other interested community members. This is the Suubi way of teaching new things; firstly empower a few and they then empower many!

One of the ladies, Ndagire Pauline, wrote down important points to remember about mushroom farming in the luganda language, making it far easier for the locals to understand.

The enthusiastic participants attentively listened and took notes.
The first part of the tuition took part in the Suubi training hall where the theory was completed. With this accomplished the group then moved on to the hands on component of the training. Every person participating was guided through the many important steps of the process.

Firstly the group was taught how to make substrate from coffee husks which are very readily available in the area.

The husks were then placed into a large drum and boiled for sterilisation.

Once sterilised the husks were cooled.

Next Nankya Madelena, (centre) patiently guided the ladies as they packed the cooled substrate into polythene bags before adding the mushroom spawn.

The bags were then placed into a dark room for two weeks. I can't wait to see photos of the results!
So as you can see it is a relatively easy process to begin mushroom farming with very few start up costs. We are hoping that now the people around Suubi have the necessary skills they will actively get involved in this income producing activity.
We are currently looking to set up a mushroom house and mushroom drying unit at Suubi. This will enable everyone who would like to get involved to tap into the export market via our connections with mushroom centre in Kabaale. You can check out how you might be able to help at the new 'Buy a HUG for Christmas' part of our website.
We are very excited by the prospects ahead for our new mushroom farmers and look forward to further updates.
Until then,
HUGs from Helen
