A hugely successful training day was recently held at Suubi with an overwhelming number of local community members participating. Students from Makerere University expertly guided the enthusiastic group through the skills required to build an fuel efficient stove.
Currently in Uganda most homes continue to use the traditional method of cooking which sees a pot placed on top off three rocks and a fire lit underneath it. This creates many problems including detrimental health issues from the excessive smoke created. Many women contract serious lung and eye problems from continually exposure to carbon monoxide. By installing fuel efficient stoves with external flues in peoples homes this can be greatly elevated.
Also the reduced amount of wood required when using a fuel efficent stove will have a positive impact in a number of other areas. Much time and energy will be saved by the women and children who are primarily responsible for collecting fire wood each day. And, critically it will reduce on the impact on the environment, as less trees will be destroyed and ultimately there will be less carbon omissions.
So hopefully if everyone who came to the training day now installs a stove in their own home and then passes on their new found knowledge to family and friends, the whole community will begin the reap the many benefits!
How the day unfolded.

Training coordinators began by pointing out the many advantages of having a fuel efficient stove, rather than the traditional method of using three rocks with a fire lit underneath.

Everyone participated enthusiastically and gained hands on experience while building the Suubi demonstration stove. Even 'feet on' experience!

Everyone then moved inside to learn the correct way to measure pots and banana stems which are an integral part of the stove construction.

Before long a masterpiece was beginning to take shape!
Suubi continues to create hope in the community! Stay tuned for more updates.
