As most of us have been easing back to work at the beginning of the new year, the team of builders at Suubi SS have been flying along with the construction of the news boys dormitory.

By Jan 8th the walls were well underway and the stairs to the entry of the dorm had been put in place.

Jan 9th saw the 'scaffolding' put in place so the builders could reach the higher wall level.

By Jan 12th the ring beam above the windows and doors had been completed, along with the columns to hold up the verandah that will run along the front of the building.

Sam and Alex, from the 2019 TeamMED crew, spent their day off from medical clinics working on the construction site. They soon found out how physically challenging it is to mix concrete on the ground with a hoe rather than having a cement mixer turn up on site and do all the work for you, as is often the case in Australia.

Sam and Liam also ventured up the scaffolding to give the bricklayers a hand. Although the day on site was very different from the medical experience the team had come to Suubi to be part of, the Aussie boys all had a great time.

Once the walls of the structure were complete, the attention soon turned to pounding down the internal floor so the concrete floor could be poured. This was all done by hand, with pounding sticks that had been made from bush poles and cement set on the end of them.

The concrete was then all mixed on the ground outside and borrowed in to place as the boys worked quickly to level it off with their hoes.

Jan 17th saw work begin on the roofing of the structure. All bush poles were cut with a hand saw

and lifted in to place by hand.

And as with everything else, it wasn't long before all the bush poles were in place.

By late yesterday, Jan 27th the iron sheets were almost all in place. The work ethic of the entire building team really is amazing - Well done boys!
We are thrilled to see the construction has reached this level already but with the Suubi SS students set to return to school later this week we are keen to get it completed as quickly as possible so the boys will have a suitable place to start the new year, rather than the cramped conditions they had to endure in a classroom last year.
Unfortunately we have already used all of the money we had raised so far to be put towards the dorm. With this in mind, we are encouraging all HUG/Suubi supporters who have ever thought about donating in the past, but never quite gotten around to it, to please head on over to our gofundmepage and donate now. Perhaps you know someone else who you think would like to donate towards this and/or would be happy do some fundraising towards this - We'd love you to spread the word or hear from you if you have any ideas.
Not only will this help us to get the dormitory finished so the boys will have a safe place to live, but it will also help us buy materials so our vocational students can be involved. Our welding students are excited about the opportunity of making the doors, windows, and bunk beds to finish off the boys new home. They will gain valuable skills as they build these items; something that they will have with them for the rest of their lives!
We are SO close to the finish now - Please donate to help us get the boys in to the new dorm as they begin the 2019 school year.
