Today was another exciting day on the Suubi calendar when the finals for our annual primary schools sports tournament took place. Since early March, nineteen of Suubi's partnering primary schools had competed in four preliminary rounds which were held at various playgrounds across Kisekka Sub County. The two strongest teams from each round, in each event, made it through to the semi finals which took place first thing this morning.

The boys football semi final were the first to be held. The Kysonko boys proved to be too strong for St Judes PS in the semi final when they won 2-0 (above). Namagongo PS came out on top of Happy Hours PS in the other semi 2-0.

The girls semi final between Busuubi PS and Kawerimidde PS (above) certainly showed great improvement in the girls skills since last years tournament.
.

Both of the girls football semi finals were decided by a penalty shoot out - nerve racking for everyone! Lubanda Islamic defeated Happy Hours 5 - 4 (above) while Kawerimidde also snuck home by 5 goals to 4 from Busuubi in the other semi girls semi.

What a site to see; supporters from the winning school, after each and every match, running on to the pitch to celebrate together.
The netball finals were another highlight of the day; it seems that each and every year the standard of play goes up another level. It was wonderful to see supporters of each school surrounding the court to cheer on their team. All matches were played with a very competitive spirit but definitely in a friendly and fare way.

Happy Hours PS took out the first netball semi final over Kysonko PS 13 - 8 (above), while Namagongo PS progressed to the final with a good win over Save PS 9 goals to 3.

Supporters from each of the participating teams surrounded the court, chanting and cheering as goals were scored.
In additional to the fabulous football and netball finals, there was also lots of interest in the volleyball; it is not as commonly played in Uganda so everyone was keen to see the top teams in action.

The final of the volleyball was hugely popular, especially with students from Seke and Busuubi.
The boys football final was the last match for the day. This saw everyone from all 13 schools who had made it through to finals days surrounding the pitch, ready for all the action.

Having fought there way through the semi final round, Kysonko PS and Nakawanga PS players were even more determine when they took to the pitch for the final.

There was certainly no holding back; each and every player put in 100% effort.

With the score tied at the end of the match, the huge crowd was once again holding their breath as the penalty shoot out took place. Kysonko were the eventual winners 5-4.

With all the matches completed it was time for speeches and to make presentations. This was a fabulous opportunity to talk to the huge crowd about everything that has been happening at Suubi Secondary & Vocational College since it opened earlier this year. Many of the primary school students who participated are aiming to be students at SSVC next year so it was fabulous to have the college students and teachers at the finals to inspire the primary students to work hard so they can join them in 2016.

With all matches completed it was time for prizes to be handed out.

Each of the 19 school who had participated throughout the 6 week event received a football and netball for their school. These were presented by Suubi Centre director, Ssemwogerere David, the Chairman of the District and the Headmaster and students from Suubi Secondary & Vocational College.

Happy Hours PS was indeed happy after being the runners up in the netball. It was their first time to participate in the Suubi schools sports event so taking home a full set of netball uniforms for their efforts was a wonderful achievement.

Being the host school, the Namagongo girls were thrilled to take out the final of the netball in front of their entire school. They have been competing in the tournament since the inaugural event but had never won before so they too were excited about receiving a brand new set of sports wear.

Once in their uniforms the boys from Nakawanga quickly forgot about their disappointment of losing the penalty shoot out.

And of course the Kysonko team were felt extra proud of being the championship team!

Both football and netball winners and runners up were happy to be pictured with the Suubi Secondary & Vocational students.
So as you can see today was another huge success. A huge thank you and congratulations must go to all Suubi staff members and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make everything run so smoothly. Everyone is already looking forward to next years event and feel sure it will continue to go from strength to strength!
