For the 8th year in succession our Suubi Butonde Bwansi Sports Tournament was recently completed. It is fabulous to see it getting bigger and better, year after year! Teams came from villages surrounding Suubi Centre including Kinoni, Sseke, Nakateteete, Kyasonko, Lubanda.... and we were enormously proud to see students from our very own Suubi Secondary School Football Club also take to the pitch this year.
With the tournament running for close to a month, early rounds were held between July 15th-27th, semi finals on August 1st-3rd and the event culminated with the finals on August 12th. This meant supportors had a number of opportunities to enjoy the various sports that were played, while at the same time giving Suubi staff many chances to pass on important messages to the crowds. They highlighted the various initiative Suubi co-ordinates, including education and health services offered at Suubi Secondary School and Suubi Heath Clinic.

Team members of our inaugural Suubi SS FC team

They were happy to be part of the action in the first round this year. They performed well for their first attempt, against far more experienced clubs. They realise that this exposure will give them a greater chance of advancing further in to the tournament next year.
Finals day was action packed throughout the day. A record 37 riders kick started they day - 28 of them did a fabulous job to complete the challenging course that took them up and down hills and through the many villages surrounding Suubi Centre. Once the action moved to the pitch the motooke peeling, tug of war and performances by Suubi Secondary School students and the Setem team kept the crowd entertained as the anticipation of the netball and football finals gathered momentum.
The entire day was a huge success; we hope you can feel the excitement and happiness that the finals brings to so many people by watching this short video. Enjoy!
The Suubi Butonde Bwansi Sports Tournament continues to grow, year after year. It is fabulous to think that so many people were having so much fun and being educated at the same time. Perfect!
The 2018 Champions, Kinoni Town Academic FC, proved too strong for Lubanda FC and the day. They were thrilled to receive a cow during the presentations for all their hard fought efforts.

St Bernard's Secondary School girls took out the honours in the netball final for the 2nd year in a row. They were happy to be taking home the title, but also a goat to enjoy!

The Suubi Secondary School girls did us proud to come runner up in the netball final.

Riders in the bike racing were thrilled to be awarded cycling shirts that had been donated by Cycling Australia and Altus.

Crossing the finishing line first saw Waaswa take home a brand new bike. The smile on his face is a perfect symbol of the great time had by all!
On a seperate sporting note, we were thrilled to hear, earlier this week, that three of our students have been selected to represent Uganda in the upcoming East African Rugby Tournament in Rwanda. This is an enormous honour and opportunity for them! BUT it has also presented a challenge..... UK based, not for profit organisation, Connect Africa has offered to cover the cost of housing and feeding the Ugandan players while they attend the tournament but each student has to be able to cover their own transportation and visa costs, which will be 250,000UGX (approximately $100AUD) each. While this seems like such a small amount, by Australian standards, for the students to have the opportunity to travel to another country and interact with their peers from many East African countries, it is simply beyond the capacity of our students families.
We know we have many sports loving HUGgers out there who will understand what a great thrill it would be for our Suubi SS students if we could help them get to Rwanda. If you, or anyone you know of, would like to contribute towards helping them make the most of the opportunity that has been presented to them, we would love to hear from you, or simply click on the donate button and tag your donation with 'rugby'. Many thanks and HUGs in anticipation from Shadia, Kennedy and Maria.

Suubi Head Master, Walugembe Robert, is enormously proud of Nalwadda Shadia, Mugera Kenaddy and Nakalanzi Maria who have been selected to represent Uganda.
