The fourth annual Suubi Schools Musical Festival, which was hosted by Kyembazzi Primary School on 27th October, was another great success. The competition has gone ahead in leaps and bounds each year, with the recent event being no exception.
Eleven Suubi partner schools captivated the large audience as they performed in the five categories of; creative dance, a poem, a skit or play, traditional dance and a composed original song. Their performances addressed the theme of the day which was "Its a child's right to have meals at school: Whose responsibility?" Each school did a wonderful job of finding their own entertaining way to get this very important message across to the many official guests, parents, teachers and the wider community who had come along to enjoy the day.

Host school, Kyembazzi, were a sea of colour as they performed their dance.

Nakawanga students were excited to be part of the event.

But it was Kisweera Primary School who were the eventual winners in both the traditional and creative dance categories.

While Kyasonko Primary School took out the winning poem.
Also throughout the day the official party and interested community members took time to tour, Kyembazzi's school garden. The gardens are an integral part to this annual event as each year participating schools are judged for the best school garden and best sanitation in the week leading up to the event.

The official party checked the host school's tomatoes in their school garden.
Mr Mutabaazi distributed cassava cuttings for planting.
The day concluded with all head teachers given an opportunity to talk about their schools before the chief guest, Mr. Mutabaazi George, Chairman of Lwengo District, presented all eleven schools; OMODING PS, Sharon PS, Lubanda Muslim PS, Namugongo PS, Nakawaanga PS, Bright Light PS, Busubi PS, Kyasonko PS, Kyembazzi PS, Kisweera PS and Good Foundation Primary school, with a certificate of participation.
He took time to thank Suubi Centre for organising such a wonderful event and pledged that Lwengo District is willing support similar events next year. During his speech he also emphasised to all head teachers that they should effectively utilise the support from Suubi Centre and strive to promote the school garden projects which will help to provide meals at school for their students.

Chief guest, Mr Mutabaazi George, presented all schools with a certificate of participation.
Mr. Kasirye, the district education representative, was given the job of awarding prizes to all winners on the day. During his speech he echoed the chairman's message and assured the crowd that the education department of Lwengo District will always work along side Suubi Centre in their aim to promote education in the district.

In discussions after the event concluded, many of the head teachers and special guests commented that it would be wonderful if the songs written and performed by the students could be made into a CD and/or DVD. This could be spread even further afield than Lwengo district, where it will showcase the students talents and also get the very important message of providing children's lunches at school out to a wider audience. We are now looking for ways that we might be able to make this happen. If you able to assist in anyway or would like to support the costs that will be associated with this initiative please email Ssemwogerere David in Uganda or Helen Brown in Australia.
So as you can see, this year's event was another huge success and even greater things may yet come from it. Kyembazzi Primary School did a wonderful job of hosting the day and their teachers and the Suubi team really did great work to organise such a spectacular event. We thank each and everyone that was involved and look forward to even bigger and better things in the future!
