Glossary of Terms
Adrift: A white water rafting company based in Jinja district.
AEW: (Also see D+) Agency for Environment and Wetlands, the NGO established by David Ssemwogerere and like minded colleagues in Uganda to promote and manage community projects. HUG partners with this organization to facilitate many of our projects.
Banda: A traditional type of accommodation. A small hut.
Black Lantern: An up-market westernized restaurant at Bujagali.
Boda boda: A motor bike usually hired with a driver to transport you from A to B
Bujugali: A parish (small village) within Kybiriwa village, within Budondo Sub-County, in Jinja district, Eastern Uganda
Bujagali Falls: A water fall in Bujagali that is classed as a grade five rapid.
Cassava: A root vegetable eaten in many areas of Uganda.
Chapati: A thin piece of roti bread made from whole wheat flour, usually served hot from a stand on the side of the road. It can eaten by itself or be rolled with sweet or savor fillings to make a 'rolex'.
Chicken Ladies: (also see the widows) A small group of elderly Ugandan widows that have made a connection with aboriginal women in Australia. They have been supplied with chickens to raise as a means of supporting themselves and their extended family.
Development Plus (D+): (also see AEW) This the NGO established by David Ssemwogerere and like minded colleagues in Uganda to promote and manage community projects. HUG partners with this organization to facilitate many of our projects. Originally it was known as AEW but changed its name to Development Plus in late 2008. This is to bring the name in line to cover the many different community areas they work in.
Double dug garden: The method of organic farming HUG is incorporating into its projects.
Eden Rock: Accommodation site in Bujagali offering small, medium and large bandas, camping and dormitory facilities.
Entebbe: Where the international airport is located.
Fort Portal: A town situated close to the Congolese boarder. Ideal place from which to explore the Rwenzori Mountain Range.
Gee nut sauce: A sauce produced from ground nuts - taste similar to peanuts.
HUG: Help Us Grow - the name our organization is affectionately known as.
HUGfest: A rock revue type show that is held annually in Shepparton Australia to raise funds for HUG.
Jinja: The 2nd largest city in Uganda. Also the name of the district in Eastern Uganda.
Kampala: The capital city of Uganda.
Kampala Backpackers: As the name would suggest, a backpackers accommodation situated in Kampala.
KCLC: Kyabram Community and Learning Centre. Closely connected with HUG from when it was initially set up and continues to be actively involved.
Kyabirwa: A village within Budondo Sub-County, in Jinja district, Eastern Uganda.
Lake Victoria: The second largest fresh water lake in the world. Borders between Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.
Lido Beach: A beach situated on the shores of Lake Victoria just a few kilometres from the international airport at Entebee. (Until very recently we have been mistakingly calling it Little Beach!)
Luganda: The official and most widely used language of Uganda.
Lusoga: The native language of the people from Busoga region in Uganda.
Masaka: One of Uganda's largest cities. Also the name of the district in Western Uganda.
Matooke: A type of banana that is considered a staple part of the Ugandan diet.
Murchison Falls: A spectacular waterfall situated within Murchison Falls National Park in north western Uganda.
Muzungu: A term affectionately used by the local Ugandan people to describe a white person.
NGO: Non Government Organization.
Nile Special: Ugandan full strength beer.
NRE: Nile River Explorers. A white water rafting company based at Bujagali.
Overlanders: Tourist traveling throughout Africa usually in an oversized truck.
Pit Latrine: A whole dug in the ground that has a structure built over it and is used as a toilet.
Posho: A corn meal product that is made from maize flour and water. Considered a staple part of the Ugandan diet.
Red Chilli: Backpacker accommodation in Kampala.
Rolex: A chapati filled with either savory or sweet filling.
Soft Power Education: A British run charity based at Bujagali that is refurbishing and building classrooms for government schools.
Special Hire: A hired car with a driver. What is commonly known in the west as a taxi.
Speke Camp: A camp site situated at Bujagali Falls.
Suubi: A luganda word that means 'hope.' Also the name given to the community and training centre built by HUG in Masaka district.
Tarmac: A sealed road. (Bitumen or asphalt.)
The Board: The group of people over seeing the running of HUG.
The Education Centre: An education centre run by Soft Power Eduction that is situated at Bujagali and is utilized by the students from their many partner schools.
The Green Light: Restaurant run by locals at Bujagali. Serves a combination of traditional and western foods.

Trading Centre: The name given to a group of shops in a village.
