The Kyabirwa Piggery Project is currently in its infancy. The aim of the project is to establish a model farm to educate local families on animal husbandry and modern farming practices.
Families in Kyabirwa are presently faced with extreme poverty where many people survive on less than a dollar a day. As a result many of the local population face uncertain futures. There are high dropout rates of children from school as families struggle to meet the cost of basic human necessities. Often young children are of more benefit to their family by working in the fields for the day. Many youth are forced to move away from the village to urban areas where they hope to gain employment that will support their families.
It is our hope that by providing a sustainable project we will improve household incomes. This will in turn improve the day to day living standards of the people in the village and therefore help to keep families together and children in school.
This project is unique in the way it has been set up. HUG will provide the initial cost to get the project started. This money will be used to purchase the materials and livestock that are required to establish the model farm. Initially 9 pigs will be purchased and families will attend the model farm to learn modern farming techniques in pig raring. As litters of piglets arrive families in the area will be given a pig to raise on their own land. In return for this, when their sow has piglets the family will be expected to PAY FORWARD a pig to another family and PAY BACK the cost of their original pig to HUG. This will be paid with 2 piglets from their first litter. All remaining piglets are then theirs to raise, market, sell, etc and they become the sole owners. This will enable them to support their families into the forseeable future.
By expecting families that are involved to pay it forward and pay it back we are empowering Ugandans in a number of ways. Firstly we have felt and witnessed first hand how fulfilling it can be to help another person/family. Ugandans should have the opportunity to feel this for themselves. Secondly the self esteem created from knowing that they have been successful enough to return the initial funds provided will create enormous self worth. We are not providing a hand out, and they are learning important business skills that will assist them well into the future.
In addition to this people who donate to this project will in fact assist many people as the funds can be used over and over again!
