D + Implementing HUG projects in Uganda
Suubi Craft Ladies
On March 8th 2008 an International Women’s Day Luncheon was held in Australia. Money raised from the luncheon was used to support a group of women in Uganda. An ongoing craft project has now been established. The women learn and share skills such as beading, weaving and craft making that will enable them to support themselves and their families.
During the April 2008 HUG trip the women were taught simple beading techniques. They were also supplied with materials to enable them to produce the initial items which they were then able to sell to get the project off and running.

During the 2009 HUG volunteer trip the women's craft group expanded to include more than 25 ladies. With the newly constructed Suubi Education and Community Centre up and running the women no longer had to sit on the ground! They attended classes at the centre to learn to make hand woven bracelets.
During 2010 the ladies group grew to exceed 40! They learnt new paper bead making skills which enabled them to make necklaces and bracelets to add to the woven jewellery they were already producing. These items are now being sold both in Uganda and at HUG events in Australia. In fact the ladies were able to sell enough of their craft to purchase a sewing machine to go with others which had been donated from Australia.
Since that time they have learnt more new skills in both sewing and knitting which has allow them to approach different schools in the area to make uniforms and sweaters.
