The community library at Suubi is a very exciting component of the Centre. By having a collection of various reading, visual and audio materials available in the village we hope to stimulate a love of reading and learning. We also believe the library is an invaluable element of the holistic approach at the centre as it supports other Suubi projects with relevant background information.
The Suubi library is open to all age groups; children, youth and adults with various reading interests. Books and resources currently available cover such topics as environment, lifestyle, economic, educational and general leisure reading. We hope to expand the selection to eventually offer an even wider variety to suit individual interest.
Various strategies are being used as we strive to inspire and attract more readers to the library. Our librarian, Najjuko Zakia, has organised reading programs for primary schools close enough to visit the library. Plans are also under way for a mobile library which will cater for schools further away.
Students from Sharon Primary School enjoy reading story books at the Suubi library.
Many adults are now also visiting the library to read newspapers which are delivered daily.
To ensure effective usage of the library materials, initiatives like 'Music, Dance and Drama' are planned. Working closely with our partner schools, Suubi Centre intends to convert information from the books into performances that children will be able to pass on to their parents and the entire community. Community education and entertainment events will then be held at Suubi where a variety of issues can be addressed. Through this medium, even those who can not read will be able to get an opportunity to learn what is written in the books.
The Suubi library is sure to enhance early literacy among children and a culture of reading among adults which will inherently improve people's live.
