What began with a small group of ladies getting together at one of their homes to learn very basic beading skills has now grown into the Suubi Craft Group.
Close to 40 dedicated people from around Suubi have since developed their skills in a variety of craft disciplines. Through meeting regularly at the Centre they have not only been able to learn invaluable tailoring, knitting and craft making skills, but it has become a place to meet friends and have a good time.
Initially group members shared skills that they excelled at and helped others to reach a level which enabled them all to create their own business. For example, some of the ladies previously had skills in sewing and knitting which they have passed on to all the others in the group. In addition to this, local and overseas volunteers shared their expertise with the participants. With these new found skills under their belt, the Suubi Craft Group have been able to approach various schools in the area to make their school uniforms and sweaters.
Paper bead making and jewellery production is another area that the Suubi Craft Group has found very rewarding. It was a relatively unknown skill to the Lubanda community, but since receiving training in this particular craft
the group have worked hard to master it. Beautiful paper bead craft, handwoven bracelets, head bands and bags are now all being produced and sold both locally and internationally. The Suubi Craft Group has been selling their beautiful craft for a number of years via HUG in Australia and more recently via Something Crafty
in the UK.
Suubi Craft Group is producing beautiful handmade craft that is been sold in Uganda and Internationally.
In addition to this, a group of Suubi ladies have worked hard to learn hand knitting skills and are now producing adorable baby garments for ILIKEMYSOCK
, a Spanish based fair trade initiative. Their items items are available to purchase at their online shop
Hand knitted items, made by Suubi Ladies are now available via ILIKEMYSOCK online shop.
Through sharing skills and sheer determination and the Suubi Craft members now have a means of supporting themselves and their families. Very exciting!
