Suubi Crafts
What began with a small group of ladies getting together at one of their homes to learn very basic beading skills has now grown into the Suubi Ladies Craft Group.
More than 30 dedicated ladies from around Suubi are now developing their skills in a variety of craft disciplines. Through meeting regularly at the Centre the ladies are not only learning invaluable tailoring, knitting and jewellery making skills, it has become a place to meet friends and have a good time.
The ladies share skills that they excel at and help others to reach a level which will enable them all to create their own business. For example, some of the ladies previously had skills in sewing and knitting which they are passing on to all the others in the group. In addition to this local and overseas volunteers, who specialise in in this field, shared their expertise with all of the ladies. Since then the Suubi craft group has been able to approach various schools in the area to make their school uniforms and sweaters.
Paper bead making and jewellery production is another area that the Suubi Craft Group is finding very successful. It was a relatively unknown skill to the ladies of Lubanda community up until 2010 but since then they have worked hard to master it. The ladies now have the ability to make beautiful paper bead necklaces and bracelets which perfectly compliments the handwoven bracelets they were previously making. All of these items are now being sold both locally and in Australia.
Through their determination and hard work the ladies involved in the Suubi Ladies Craft Group now have a means of supporting themselves.Very exciting!
